A critical access hospital located in the Midwest had a 30 year surgery director retire approximately one year ago. The replacement is now leaving (doesn't want to be in management) and the hospital is changing the structure from multiple nursing directors to having one and then a surgery manager and inpatient manager. The interim will assist with this transition.

The surgery department has 2 OR suites and a 4-bed recovery. Cases are general surgery, endo, eyes, OB, ortho (every other week) and ENT. Total number of cases are 450 in 2017. Has been dropping as it was 500. This year is on pace for fewer. The reasons are lack of referrals to general surgeon and podiatry dropped due to retirement. They feel they can attract more specialists. The also have some issues with staff silo.
