Job Description

In House Counsel – Trade Compliance (Import/Export) – immediate opening for large global company. The responsibilities for this position will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Providing practical legal advice on international trade compliance law, including import laws and programs such as foreign trade zones and C-TPAT, and export laws and regulations such as classification, export and re-export issues, anti-boycott, embargoes, deemed export requirements, and licensing requirements
  • Collaboratively working with other associates in the Trade Compliance team, the legal Department and relevant Company business units as needed throughout the world
  • Leading a team of import and export compliance specialists
  • Analyzing and applying US trade law, and from time to time the laws of other countries, to company
  • Drafting, negotiating and reviewing trade terms contained in commercial agreements
  • Proactively tracking legislative, regulatory and administrative developments and providing clients with practical guidance and support on new compliance requirements
  • Drafting and maintaining policies and procedures related to trade compliance
  • Developing and providing training on subjects related to trade compliance, including duties, tariffs, foreign trade zones, trade sanctions, classifications, and anti-boycott compliance and other related topics

Required qualifications and experience for this position:

  • Member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar
  • A minimum of 8 years with an in-house legal team and/or large commercial law firm (a history in both environments is preferred), with experience in regulatory and policy advice in the area of international trade compliance
  • IT or banking industry experience preferred
  • Experience with US regulators (e.g. OFAC, State Department, CBP)
  • Knowledge of U.S. import laws and programs, including Foreign Trade Zones and C-TPAT
  • Knowledge of U.S. export control regulations, including ITAR, EAR, and OFAC regulations
  • Experience advising clients on compliance with US export controls, trade and economic sanctions, and anti-boycott controls
  • Experience advising clients on licensing, enforcement actions, internal investigations and audits, export classification, encryption, due diligence in mergers and acquisitions and on the design, implementation, and administration of compliance programs
