Primary Purpose of Position

Reporting to the HR Manager with a dotted line to the Plant Manager, the incumbent is responsible for leading, executing and assisting the Management Team in areas related to health, safety and the environment including but not limited to HSE compliance, reporting, assessment. To provide the teams at MPA with information and direction relating to all areas of health, safety and the environment. To develop training material and programs which support the team concept and provide training to team members in a variety of skills and programs, particularly safety.

Major Responsibilities of Position

Safety

  • Research, write, maintain and communicate to employees the safety policies and procedures through implementation and management of the Health & Safety program.
  • Co-ordinate & develop monthly safety talks and maintain tracking system.
  • Conduct regular safety audits (safety awareness & hazard identification).
  • Effectively communicate to all levels of the organization with regard to HSE issue as required

Health and Safety Coordination

  • Ensure compliance with ALL related Laws, acts, regulations, and standards and to also keep current with these as they relate to our industry.
  • Co-ordinate H&S audits, PPE audits, Environmental audits, external supplier audits, wellness audits, ISO audits and ERT audits.
  • Continuously improve upon and maintain accident investigation data. First Aid and Medical Aid tracking system and create any reports as required.
  • Monitoring PPE usage to continuously improve the quality and needs as required.
  • Analyze safety concerns and trends
  • Complete and coordinate all Workers compensation related activities and manage all employee Return to Work programs.
  • As required be part of design of new equipment and programs and ensure that New Equipment Sign Offs and Pre-start Safety documents are reviewed.
  • Maintaining and monitoring MSDS management system.
  • Assist in writing, modifying and verifying Management System documents and procedures, and ISO 14001 documents / procedures, as related to safety.

Training

  • Attend training and professional development courses and seminars to ensure best practice.
  • Assist with the evaluation of the safety training program and its’ effectiveness.
  • Maintain required designation and memberships in regard to HSE.
  • Provide assistance with training programs as required
  • Co-ordinate health, safety and environment training throughout all facilities, ensuring employees receive appropriate training.
  • Acquire appropriate resources for training from external parties, as required.

Safety Committee

  • Active member & coordinate meetings. Assist in follow up with action items.
  • Coordinate any “ad hoc or special” meetings for the committee based on issues that arise
  • Ensure audits are completed in a timely fashion and that follow up takes place.

Environmental Management

  • Ongoing review and updating of EMS ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and laws and conformance to the ISO 14001 standard.
  • Assist in the budget review process to ensure appropriate funds are requested for safety & environmental compliance and continual improvements.
  • Completing auditing activities and EMS 400-014 Corrective Action Notices as required.
  • Completing and maintaining Risk Evaluation Sheets.

Environmental Management Team

  • Ensure continuous improvement by reviewing objectives and targets and internal/external customer concerns, reviewing audit results and EMS programs elements and establishing action items and recommendations
  • Responsible for development, review and updates for the EMS documentation system.
  • Provides advice and support to management team ensuring that MPA remains compliant with all relevant legislation.
  • Responsible for maintaining documented records; coaching and supporting the EMS internal auditors; monitoring the performance of the Project Team
  • responsible for coordinating the setting of MPA Objectives and Targets and establishing measurables.
  • responsible for identifying Aspects and Impacts and the significance of those impacts on the environment.
  • responsible for conducting internal audits of EMS to ensure conformance to MPA’s ISO 14001 program. Create action plans in response to non-conformances
  • Responsible for: updating ISOsoft 14001 Software, ensuring MPA meets legal regulations and permits, and being accountable to the Management Team.
  • Other duties as required, including special projects as they arise.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to work in production setting around loud noises and potentially hot/humid conditions
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk
  • Must have the ability to tolerate the above requirements for a minimum of 8 hours daily

Experience, Educational and Certification Requirements

5 years’ experience coordinating occupational environmental, health & safety programs in the automotive manufacturing industry; experience in die casting & machining environments preferred - Essential

Working knowledge of OSHA Health & Safety Act, and Regulations and keep up to date on changes and knowledge of all health, safety & environmental legislation. - Essential

Occupational Health & Safety certification - Highly Desirable

Health & Safety Professional designation - Highly Desirable

Industrial Hygiene knowledge and training - Highly Desirable

Ergonomic & Kinesiology Training - Highly Desirable

Auditor training for ISO 14000 or 18000 system - Preferred

Working Knowledge and/or relative training in Environmental legislation - Preferred

Human Resource Working Knowledge and/or Education - Preferred
