The HVAC System Engineer will work in the Advanced Building Systems group to design purpose-built HVAC systems. Utilize demonstrated experience with holistic HVAC design for residential and hospitality packaged and split systems.

Essential Job Functions

  • Architect, design, and deliver next-generation HVAC heat pump platforms, both packaged and split, for both residential and hospitality markets.

  • Participate as a key individual design contributor on design of all aspects of HVAC heat pump operation, including heat exchanger, blower, condenser, refrigerant, condensate management and controls.

  • Simulate design efficiencies and tradeoffs on systems and subsystems using thermodynamic modelling techniques.

  • Formulate relations and collaborate with external agencies (such as Oakridge National Research Laboratory) on next generation and best-in-class technologies.

  • Participate as a major technical point of contact with various suppliers of key system components

  • Coordinate with lab technicians to complete performance testing, reliability testing and agency testing requirements.

  • Evaluate for manufacturability and reliability.

  • Partner with manufacturing to understand and translate design and process engineering requirements into product line design components, subsystems and products

  • Participate in the product definition, especially around the aspects of the major operational components, attempting to resolve ambiguity into concrete technical proposals


Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of HVAC development experience, with at least 7+ years of demonstrable experience in integrating next-generation technologies

  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience

  • Solid understanding of heat transfer, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics

  • Understands materials science fundamentals

  • Experience with technical computing: Matlab, Modelica, Python or similar

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in wiring with diverse audiences including cross functional team members, senior leaders, global suppliers, government and certification agencies, and external customers including service managers and technicians

  • Ability to participate in a highly collaborative environment, with both on-site and remote contributors
