Our client is a leading law firm located centrally in Houston, TX. The firm is growing and has expanded to three locations in Texas. With over 40 lawyers and a staff of over 100 other employees we are seeking a trusted HR subject matter expert to handle payroll, benefits, and employee relations. Located on-site daily with core hours of 9-5.

This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer and the HR Manager will be a strategic team member. We are looking for someone that can support growth and drive a culture of excellence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement and manage firmwide HR initiatives for all offices
  • Manage the areas of benefits administration, 401(k), employee relations, HR compliance, HRIS, training & organizational development, employee engagement, and other HR related projects as needed
  • Work with COO, Partners and Director of Professional Development to assess and forecast personnel hiring needs
  • Manage creation of accurate job descriptions and the sourcing (through staffing agencies), recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding of candidates
  • Conduct New Hire and Benefits Orientation for new employees
  • Compile relevant market data for each category of employee for purposes of making compensation and bonus recommendations
  • Lead employee compensation process involving COO, Finance Director, Director of Professional Development, and Personnel Liaison Partner
  • Lead performance evaluation and performance management process
  • Collaborate with Director of Training to recommend and implement training as appropriate to support employee success
  • Manage all payroll functions using Paycom
  • Maintain employee files and HR Systems; including new hire user-provisioning, change of status, terminations, data entry, and any applicable updates, as needed
  • Complete all required government agency reporting
  • Conduct criminal and credit background checks
  • Lead benefits renewal process; serve as point of contact with insurance broker
  • Manage, investigate, and mediate employee relations issues; provide advice and counsel to employees regarding employee relations issues as well as discussing appropriate actions and alternatives
  • Ensure firm’s compliance with local, state, and federal regulations; including ADA, EEO, FMLA, OSHA and FLSA
  • Provide HR administrative support and leadership to staff and attorneys
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with attorneys and staff;
  • Serve as point of contact for inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and programs and respond using discretion and good judgment
  • Investigate work-related accidents/issues and prepare reports as appropriate, escalating unresolved issues to the COO
  • Lead employee recognition events (weddings, illnesses, deaths, births, work anniversaries)
  • Manage Leave of Absence and communicate with employees regarding status
  • Coordinate Leaves of Absence in conjunction with Short Term Disability, FMLA leave, Maternity and Parental Leave programs; including handling recordkeeping and communications with employees and providers
  • Maintain a current knowledge of applicable laws, rulings and regulations and recommend appropriate changes in office practices
  • Lead offboarding process; including providing benefits separation information, conducting exit interviews, and ensuring firm property is returned
  • Timesheet approval and OT entry, approval of and monitor the vacation/PTO schedule to ensure office staffing needs
  • Communicate interdepartmentally while maintaining credibility, confidentiality, trust and support
  • Collaborate with the COO, Sr. Manager of Office Operations and office managers to institute consistent office procedures
  • Develop, recommend, and implement personnel policies and procedures; including employee handbook, HR policies and procedures
  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of department and services performed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field
  • Minimum of seven years' experience in full-time Human Resources role
  • Prior law firm Human Resources experience strongly preferred, but not required
  • Experience with Paycom is a plus
  • Travel between 3 offices and elsewhere in Texas as appropriate
  • Exceptional judgment, interpersonal skills and high EQ
  • Ability to communicate successfully with all roles within the Firm
