Job Title: Field Tech (Entry Level) Location: Somerset, NJ (with travel to NJT locations throughout New Jersey)

Position Overview: We are seeking 2-3 Field Techs for a special project involving the upgrade and maintenance of fare collection equipment across New Jersey Transit's extensive transportation network. This project focuses on swapping Ux-301 card readers on 562 Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) and P-200 components on 128 Ticket Office Machines (TOMs) as part of NJT's ongoing fare modernization initiative.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Remove and replace Ux-301 card readers on ticket vending machines at various NJT locations
  • Perform component swaps on P-200 units within ticket office machines
  • Conduct basic functionality testing on upgraded equipment to ensure proper operation
  • Document completed work and report any technical issues or anomalies
  • Travel to multiple NJT stations, bus depots, and transit facilities throughout New Jersey
  • Follow safety protocols and procedures while working in active transportation environments
  • Coordinate with project supervisors and NJT personnel as needed
  • Maintain organized inventory of replacement parts and removed components
NOTE that this role requires the use of your personal vehicle to assist with the service. You will be paid the standard mileage rate, which will be discussed during screening/interview.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and comfort working with electronic equipment
  • Ability to follow detailed technical instructions and procedures
  • Physical ability to lift moderate weights and work in various positions
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel between job sites
  • Willingness to work in active transit environments (train stations, bus depots)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with electronic equipment installation or repair
  • Background in transit systems, fare collection, or similar technology
  • Basic understanding of card reader or payment processing equipment
  • Experience working in public transportation or similar customer-facing environments

Project Details: This project is part of NJT's comprehensive fare modernization program, which includes upgrading ticket vending machines to support contactless payment options and enhanced customer experience features. Work will be conducted across NJT's extensive system, which includes bus routes, light rail lines, and commuter rail stations throughout New Jersey.

Work Environment:

  • Field-based position requiring travel to multiple NJT locations
  • Work performed in both indoor and outdoor transit facility environments
  • Standard business hours with potential for some weekend work depending on project schedule
  • Professional work environment with coordination between project team and NJT personnel
