About the Opportunity
We’re partnering with an established, growth-oriented lab services organization that supports laboratories nationwide through instrument sales, service, and refurbishment—specializing in chromatography and mass spectrometry equipment. With a lean, highly experienced team and a strong reputation in the market, this organization offers the kind of hands-on environment where good work is noticed and growth is real.
This Field Service Engineer – GCMS role is open due to a recent resignation and is part of a broader expansion (two FSE hires). The Houston-based position is designed for someone who enjoys a mix of bench work and customer support: primarily in-house repair/refurbishment with limited national travel. Long-term, the team is motivated to develop this hire into leadership as the service function continues to scale.
This opportunity fits a technically strong, self-directed service professional who likes owning repairs end-to-end, working with a small team, and being trusted to solve problems without layers of bureaucracy.
What You’ll Do
-
Refurbish, troubleshoot, and repair GCMS instrumentation in an in-house environment (majority of the role).
-
Provide field support as needed, traveling nationally to diagnose issues, complete repairs, and support customer success.
-
Identify root causes, document service work clearly, and maintain strong communication with internal stakeholders.
-
Collaborate closely with a tenured service leader and team to prioritize workload and maintain service quality standards.
-
Support business growth by contributing to a service culture that earns repeat customers and long-term relationships.
-
Participate in technical evaluation during the interview process by demonstrating hands-on troubleshooting capability on an instrument.
Travel / Work Model
-
Houston-based role: approximately 75% in-house / 25% travel (national travel).
Who You Are
You’re the kind of engineer who wants the instrument in front of you—ready to troubleshoot, diagnose, and fix what others can’t. You’re comfortable working independently, communicating clearly with customers and teammates, and staying calm when the issue is urgent. You like environments where experience matters, leadership is accessible, and there’s room to grow into more responsibility over time.
Preferred Experience & Attributes
-
5–6+ years of experience servicing GCMS instrumentation.
-
Experience from a third-party service provider or an instrument manufacturer/service organization.
-
Background as an in-house service/support professional or chemist transitioning into field service is also welcomed.
-
Strong troubleshooting and repair skills with a practical, hands-on approach.
-
Clear communication, strong organization, and comfort operating with autonomy.
