Perform Facilities-oriented building service duties including, but not limited to:

  • Building operations support under Facilities management
  • Setup, breakdown, and reconfiguration of furniture, fixtures, and equipment
  • Internal moves and logistical support for offices, Galleries, storage, and event spaces
  • Distribution and movement of materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Waste collection, recycling, and bulk material removal
  • General custodial or operational support as assigned by Facilities
  • Restocking operational consumables (paper goods, equipment supplies, etc.)
  • Monitoring facilities spaces for cleanliness, safety, and readiness
  • Assisting Facilities trades and supervisors with non-skilled support tasks
  • Supporting planned maintenance, shutdowns, and space reconfigurations
  • After-hours and emergency facilities support as required

Special Events Support (Facilities-Led)

Must be able to support Facilities-managed Special Events logistics, including preparation, execution, and restoration of event space.

Duties include:

  • Event space setup and breakdown (tables, chairs, staging, podiums, trash cans, pipe and drapes, barriers)
  • Physical preparations of interior and exterior event locations
  • Transport and installation of event furniture, signage, stanchions, and equipment
  • Support during events, including repositioning and operational readiness
  • Post-event breakdown, cleanup coordination, and space restoration
  • Support for evening, weekend, and high-profile institutional events
  • Coordination with Facilities, Special Events staff, Security, Visitor Services
  • Supporting inclement weather plans for outdoor events
  • Responding to last-minute operational changes directed by Facilities

Qualifications:
  • Physically capable of lifting, moving, and transporting equipment and furniture with a weight limit of up to but no more than 50 pounds
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience
  • Can work independently or as part of a Facilities team
  • Follow Facilities schedules, safety procedures, and instructions
  • Maintain professional appearance and conduct
  • Interact respectfully with Smithsonian staff, visitors, and stakeholders
  • Comply with all Smithsonian security access requirements
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of workplace safety and hazard awareness

Work Schedule and Flexibility:
  • Work Schedule will be a 40-hour work week. Friday through Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There may be times when we ask the contractor to work evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays, as well. That will be discussed at the time of the need and approved by the COTR
  • Work schedules may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Shifts may be adjusted to support Facilities operational needs and events
  • Contractor personnel must be available for scheduled and time-sensitive Facilities support
