Engineering Manager

Location: Denver, Colorado (Relocation Package Available)
Travel: Up to 20%, including occasional international travel

Position Overview

We are supporting a transformer service organization in hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a four-person engineering team at its Denver repair and remanufacturing facility.

This position oversees engineering activities supporting transformer repairs, rewinds, upgrades, field services, technical proposals, and project execution. The manager will provide technical direction, improve engineering processes, develop team capabilities, and work closely with operations, quality, purchasing, sales, and customers.

The successful candidate will have extensive power transformer design and testing experience, strong leadership skills, and the ability to manage technically complex projects in a fast-paced service environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of engineers, including hiring, training, work allocation, performance management, and technical development.
  • Oversee engineering support for transformer repair, remanufacturing, upgrade, rewind, and field service projects.
  • Establish engineering priorities and ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
  • Develop a multi-year engineering plan focused on standardization, continuous improvement, employee development, and business growth.
  • Support annual revenue and profitability objectives in partnership with commercial and operational leadership.
  • Review customer specifications, technical requirements, drawings, test plans, and project documentation.
  • Provide engineering input for proposals, quotations, change orders, project strategies, and milestone schedules.
  • Approve technical exceptions, clarifications, vendor submittals, customer recommendations, and engineering deliverables.
  • Lead design reviews and evaluate risks associated with transformer repairs, uprates, upgrades, and reverse-engineering activities.
  • Review failure investigations, root-cause analyses, repair instructions, testing results, and diagnostic findings.
  • Provide senior-level support for complex transformer troubleshooting, testing, design, and field issues.
  • Create and improve engineering procedures, technical standards, workflows, and quality programs.
  • Work with quality and testing personnel to develop appropriate inspection and electrical testing methods.
  • Support cost-reduction initiatives, supplier performance, operational efficiency, and service quality.
  • Collaborate with operations, sales, purchasing, and quality teams to improve safety, productivity, project execution, and customer satisfaction.
  • Serve as a technical resource for key customers and assist with escalated technical or project concerns.
  • Participate in major proposals, customer meetings, site visits, technical presentations, and RFP or RFQ responses.
  • Maintain current technical knowledge through industry organizations, training, professional publications, and technical events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least eight years of transformer engineering experience involving design, testing, manufacturing, repair, or service.
  • Previous experience leading engineers and managing projects valued above $1 million.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medium and large power transformers.
  • Experience with specialized transformer applications, such as furnace, rectifier, regulating, phase-shifting, mobile, or grounding transformers, is preferred.
  • Master’s degree, Professional Engineer licence, or Six Sigma Green Belt certification is considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting transformers from different manufacturers, designs, ages, and applications.
  • Strong understanding of transformer windings, cores, tanks, insulation systems, conductors, fluids, protection, and control systems.
  • Ability to review or revise transformer outline drawings, nameplates, winding diagrams, control schematics, and testing plans.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and transformer design or analysis software.
  • Strong project management, commercial awareness, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings to customers and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience directing shop personnel or field crews is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel to customer, supplier, and company facilities as required.
