Position Responsibilities:
Reporting to the SVP Supply Chain of a major retailer whose 1,900 employees serve 300 locations via 21 distribution centers nationwide. Will manage inbound and outbound transportation through several directs. The majority of the indirects are private fleet drivers and maintenance personnel who report directly to distribution center management.
The Director of Transportation is responsible for optimizing and directing the day-to-day execution of both the inbound (including from overseas) and the outbound carriers/private-fleet final-mile in-market delivery network, that serve the stores from the regional distribution centers. The position will regularly review, plan, and execute transportation programs, including maintenance, to maximize service, safety, and performance. The short-term focus is to ensure that current operations meet corporate cost budgets and service levels. The long-term focus is to minimize cost and improve service to support revenue growth. This will require (a) working closely with marketing, procurement, and the DCs to identify business trends, and (b) being proficient in state-of-the art transportation equipment, processes, and IT tools. The challenge is to maximize transportation’s support of the corporate continuous improvement goals.

Background Required:
  • Transportation planning and management - inbound and outbound (10 years)
  • Organization responsibility of a transportation department (5 years)
  • Supply-chain exposure (2 years)
  • Budgeting, P/L, payment responsibility
  • Experience implementing and using dynamic routing software (i.e. TMS)
  • Experience managing third party carriers for ocean freight and customs
  • Experience managing a team doing dynamic routing and load consolidation
  • Carrier procurement – RFP/bidding/negotiation/contracts
  • Private fleet management
  • Track record of cost and service improvement
  • Reverse logistics and ecommerce
  • State-of-the art transportation equipment, processes, and IT tools - particularly routing and ERP
  • Federal and state regulations (CSA, FMCSR, OSHA, DOT, ELD)
  • Mentoring, training, retention, KPIs
  • Metrics measurements (i.e. on time delivery, utilization, costs)
  • Travel: 30%
  • Education: Bachelor degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Finance, or Business
  • Residence: Metro Atlanta GA (preference given to local candidates)
