Position Summary

The Director of Operations – Designate is responsible for leading transportation operations, supervising drivers and administrative staff, coordinating routing and scheduling activities, and ensuring compliance with DOT and company safety standards. This role plays a critical part in maintaining efficient operations, maximizing productivity, and supporting a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee smooth and efficient transportation operations with 24-hour departmental coverage as needed
  • Supervise and support transportation drivers and administrative staff to ensure accountability, performance, and operational success
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate all delivery and backhaul logistics activities
  • Ensure compliance with all Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company safety standards
  • Report accidents, incidents, and unsafe conditions promptly to leadership and safety personnel
  • Manage teammate scheduling and ensure dispatch schedules are accurate, organized, and communicated effectively
  • Provide ongoing coaching and training to improve workforce performance and operational efficiency
  • Facilitate strong communication between management and transportation teams to promote collaboration and accountability
  • Monitor and analyze operational metrics including routes, unload rates, stops, and delivery timing to improve productivity
  • Assist in developing and implementing operational improvements, procedures, and best practices
  • Enforce company policies and support corrective action processes professionally and consistently in partnership with Human Resources

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in outbound transportation, logistics, or distribution operations required
  • Foodservice distribution industry experience strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field preferred
  • Experience with transportation and operational reporting systems such as AS400, XATA, TRUCKS, Microsoft Excel, Word, or Access preferred
  • Strong analytical, planning, and organizational skills
  • Experience analyzing operational reporting, productivity metrics, and transportation performance data
  • Working knowledge of DOT regulations, fleet safety standards, routing systems, and transportation operations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, coach, and manage teams effectively
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to safely ascend and descend stairs or ramps during operational and route supervision
