Director of Finance (Contract)
Job Description
Position Objective :
The Director, Finance is responsible for managing the general accounting department, including general ledger, hospital endowment funds, third-party reimbursement, budget, costing, cash flow analysis and decision support functions. This position, reporting to the Vice President of Finance/CFO, is accountable for leading the Finance team in managing the hospital’s financial and accounting policies, systems and processes, tax and regulatory requirements, payroll systems and processes and the Hospital controls, ongoing financial and business development modeling and the annual budget. Provide leadership, coaching and guidance to the Finance team.
Duties:
Responsible for the daily operational aspects of the finance department.
Oversee the external audit, review and analyze results audit.
Responsible for the coordination of the Form 990 preparation by external consultants.
Ensure the Hospital is in compliance with all internal financial policies and relevant regulations and ensure filings are completed in a timely manner.
Ensure compliance with all banking and bond covenants and requirements.
Maintain compliance with governmental and institutional grants to the Hospital and the Foundation.
Manage the payroll function ensuring efficient systems, back-ups, processes and controls. Ensure that all federal and state quarterly and annual reports are filed timely.
Manage the financial systems (Kronos, Banking Systems, Meditech, etc.), ensuring maximum productivity and that they continue to meet the needs of the business today and the future.
Manage cash flows to meet accounts payable and payroll obligations.
Oversee the continuous improvement of accounting processes and the development of the team with the goal to achieve best practices and optimal output.
Develop and maintain accounting policies, financial management reporting tools and procedures to meet both current and future business needs.
Manage ongoing banking relationships for maximum efficiency.
Develop cash flow forecasting and maintain a long term cash forecast.
Responsible for financial reporting for Hospital and all of its affiliates.
Develop and prepare a monthly management reporting package for the Board; making enhancements to the reporting package as requested.
Assist the CFO with presenting monthly and year-to-date financials with accompanying analysis of results to the Board’s Finance and Investment Committee.
Develop regular reporting and analysis, including key metrics reports, and conduct ad hoc financial analysis as requested.
Responsible for the annual budgeting process in coordination with the Controller.
Complete analysis, present results and make recommendations for managed care contracts.
Provide ongoing financial modeling and analysis expertise to internal and external business partners.
Lead the financial modeling and analysis to develop systems, processes and policies to support the achievement of the hospital’s short and long term priorities and business plans in a cost effective manner.
Develop and nurture alliance with physician community through professional and courteous communications and presenting them support regarding business issues when and as needed.
Perform analytical studies to identify and support business development relative to clinical, financial, quality and market data.
Serve as a subject matter expert for the finance department related to Meditech's general ledger, accounts payable and fixed assets applications.
Develop detailed pro formas, ROI projections and break-even analysis to assess the financial feasibility of each new business opportunity as well as existing service lines.
Develop Finance team goals that are fully aligned with the hospital’s strategic plan and mission.
Ensure the finance team delivers the highest standard of departmental, cross departmental and overall teamwork and customer service to the Hospital and its affiliates.
Ensure optimal deployment of resources to achieve business goals.
Responsible for the overall leadership, engagement and management of the finance team including hiring, development, mentoring, performance management and discipline following the organizations established policies and guidelines.
Maintain a high level of integrity, professionalism and trust with employees and team members.
Collaborate effectively with others to achieve positive work outcomes and is receptive to suggestions and continually seeks to improve performance.
Understand and adhere to organizational compliance, safety and patient privacy standards as they appear in the organizational policies; maintain confidentiality of all hospital information.
Ensure consistent service delivery in a consultative and solutions-based capacity to all levels of staff with regard to financially related plans, policies and procedures by the finance team.
Coordinates and works collaboratively and effectively with key stakeholders and various department administrators, physicians, the Board’s Finance and Investment Committee, IT, etc. to ensure needs of the organization are being met.
Participates in professional activities and maintains professional affiliations to keep abreast of trends/changes, regulations and legislation in the field.
Participates on Hospital and task force committees as required.
Develop and maintain collaborative and positive working relationships with outside vendors and associations (NHHA, TD Banks, etc.) to achieve business goals.
Develop systems, processes and policies to support the achievement of the hospital’s short and long term priorities in a cost effective manner.
Position Qualifications :
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited 4-year college or university in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related field; MBA or CPA preferred.
Ten years’ progressive accounting and finance experience in a healthcare setting required; acute care hospital setting preferred.
Minimum seven years’ experience providing direct leadership, mentoring and people management.
Proven ability to create strategic direction, communicate it effectively and engage the workforce to work towards a common goal.
Advanced computer experience with MS Office Suite (Excel, Word and Powerpoint) and EMR systems, Meditech preferred.
Ability to work independently to manage multiple projects, prioritize assignments, handle stressful situations and meet deadlines without direct supervision.
Proven ability to set priorities, exercise initiative and judgement and make decisions within scope of assigned authority.
Ability to work effectively with management and staff at various levels in the organization and with external consultants, vendors and auditors.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a diverse audience.
Expertise in developing spreadsheets, word documents, and upgrading financial applications of the Meditech system.
Strong working knowledge of third-party Medicare and Medicaid cost reporting and reimbursement.
Knowledge of hospital liability, property, workers comp and other insurance coverage.
Knowledge of generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Ability to work extended working hours various times throughout the fiscal year.
Proven experience with strategy development and implementation.
Experience with re-engineering processes and large scale systems change.
Strong business acumen.
Ability to lead complex projects through to completion.
Proven ability to lead others through change and new strategic initiatives.
Proven ability to build effective teams, coach and develop others.
