Design Engineer
Job Summary:
The Design Engineer performs structural analysis and design for materials provided by the Company in accordance with the appropriate design criteria (building code and loads), steel specifications, customer’s agreement to purchase, and Company’s design practices. Design provided is structurally sound, least weight/cost, and on schedule. The complexity of orders will consist of all levels with larger volume of higher complexity work based on the design engineer’s abilities.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering, and/or Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering; or other related degree
- Degree from ABET accreditation and sufficient for future professional engineer licensure
- Licensed in at least one state
Experience:
- Three to five years metal building design experience
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform structural design of primary and secondary structural framing and connections on building orders.
- Remain current in knowledge and proficient in use of AISC and AISI material specifications, current and recent editions of ASCE 7 and IBC, and the MBMA Building Systems Manual. Proficient in various city, county, state and international building codes.
- Maintain computer literacy in design software and other computer tools available while expanding knowledge of specialty applications.
- Maintain efficient, timely, legible, and easy to comprehend documentation of engineering designs and builder/customer interface information.
- Work with drafting on shop fabrication and field erection details of engineering designs.
- Maintain good established communication with all engineering and drafting department personnel during correlation of design/detail aspects as a building order proceeds through the engineering and drafting department.
- Review drawings prepared by drafting to confirm that engineer’s design intent was properly understood and incorporated into drawings.
- Maintain a high productivity rate with low errors and ensure that all jobs are completed on or before the scheduled due date.
- Prepare submittal of design calculations when required.
- Provide assistance to estimating/sales with value engineering and efficient design for quotes.
- Maintain complete familiarity with building products produced by the Company
- Exercise sound judgment on designs/details affecting economics of field erection versus plant fabrication.
- Provide recommendations to engineering management as to more efficient design and materials utilization for improving product sale ability and ease of manufacturing and field erection.
- Work with estimators, project managers, engineers, and detailers on utilization of Company’s procedures and products to meet customer’s needs.
- Check design documentation prepared by other engineering staff members.
- Provide certification with seal and signature on Company’s construction documents on orders in states with professional engineering licensure.
- Obtain Professional Engineering Licensure in additional states.
