Design Engineer- Power Transformers

We are looking for a highly capable and forward-thinking engineer to contribute to meaningful projects that support critical electrical infrastructure. We value individuals who combine strong technical depth with curiosity, initiative, and a practical approach to problem-solving. This is an opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, contribute across the full project lifecycle, and play a key role in advancing engineering solutions in a collaborative, quality-driven environment.

We are seeking a Power Transformer Design Engineer to support an expanding transformer repair and remanufacturing operation. This role is tied to a service center focused on the refurbishment, redesign, and modernization of a wide range of transformer assets, including substation, arc furnace, mobile, phase-shifting, rectifier, regulating, and zig-zag units.

Key Responsibilities

The engineer in this position will be responsible for the design, redesign, and technical support of liquid-filled power transformers and specialty transformer products rated up to 200 MVA / 345 kV. The role requires close coordination with engineering, production, winding, testing, field service, and commercial teams to ensure designs are technically sound, manufacturable, and aligned with customer and operational requirements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop new and reverse-engineered designs for transformer coils and active parts used in liquid-filled power and specialty transformers up to 200 MVA, 345 kV class
  • Evaluate existing designs and identify opportunities to improve performance, efficiency, maintainability, and reliability
  • Work closely with transformer engineers, winding personnel, and shop teams to refine legacy designs and improve manufacturing and training practices
  • Define technical design scopes for repair, remanufacturing, and custom transformer projects
  • Produce engineering packages including drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and supporting technical documentation in accordance with applicable standards and project requirements
  • Perform electrical, thermal, mechanical, and short-circuit calculations required for design development and validation
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, test, and field teams to ensure design intent is executed properly and complies with project objectives
  • Provide technical guidance to internal stakeholders, suppliers, and customers throughout execution of projects
  • Participate in design reviews, troubleshooting efforts, root cause investigations, and process improvement initiatives
  • Remain informed on relevant standards, codes, and developments affecting transformer design and production practices
  • Support quotation and proposal activities through technical input, concept development, and estimating support
  • Assist with initiatives related to safety, quality, productivity, and engineering improvement
  • Collaborate with business and technical teams on innovation and product development efforts
  • Travel within North America as needed for business support; 10% if based in Denver CO, up to 35% travel if based out of Denver, CO.
  • Relocation closer to the operating site is strongly preferred over time, although candidates with a longer-term relocation plan may also be considered

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required; Master’s degree preferred
  • At least 5 years of experience in transformer coil design, active-part design, and/or transformer repair engineering
  • Hands-on experience with transformer design software, including tools used for coil design and short-circuit modeling
  • Broad familiarity with multiple transformer types, OEM designs, and rating classes is strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of transformer applications and applicable industry codes and standards
  • Solid understanding of transformer electrical and mechanical design considerations, including thermal behavior, dielectric systems, mechanical integrity, acoustics, and short-circuit performance
  • Ability to perform detailed calculations related to turns ratio, copper loss, core loss, inrush current, and related performance parameters
  • Experience diagnosing transformer issues involving windings, core assemblies, and structural components
  • Background in root cause failure analysis and development of technical corrective actions for design-related issues
  • Ability to prepare technical reports supported by sound engineering analysis and data
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience creating component and part drawings using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar CAD platforms
  • Strong planning, organization, and prioritization skills
  • Effective time management and ability to handle multiple engineering demands
  • Ability to travel throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico without requiring visa sponsorship
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams
  • Detail-oriented, solutions-focused mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement
