Position Summary

Magellan Aerospace, New York (Bohemia) is looking for a Cutter/Grinder. This position plays a vital role in the manufacturing process by operating and maintaining precision grinding machinery to produce high-quality cutting tools. The Cutter/Grinder will be responsible for sharpening and grinding various types of cutters, drills, and similar tools to precise specifications. The successful incumbent’s expertise will contribute to enhancing productivity and ensuring the optimal performance of cutting tools within the manufacturing facility. The pay range is $20/hr to $25/hr.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Operate Grinding Machinery: Set up, operate, and monitor precision grinding machines to grind and sharpen cutting tools, such as milling cutters, drills, reamers, and other types of cutting tools.
  • Tool Preparation: Examine blueprints, drawings, or specifications to determine the required dimensions and tolerances of the cutting tools. Select appropriate grinding wheels, fixtures, and tooling to perform accurate grinding operations..
  • Tool Sharpening and Grinding: Utilize grinding machinery to sharpen and grind cutting edges, angles, profiles, and other critical features of the cutting tools. Ensure adherence to specified dimensions, angles, and surface finishes.
  • Measurement and Inspection: Use precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges, to verify the accuracy and quality of ground tools. Make adjustments or rework as necessary to meet required specifications.
  • Tool Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on grinding machinery, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn or damaged components. Report any equipment malfunctions or abnormalities to the maintenance department.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed records of tool grinding operations, including tool specifications, dimensions, and grinding parameters. Provide reports on productivity, tool life, and any quality issues encountered during the grinding process.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety guidelines, procedures, and regulations to ensure a safe working environment. Identify and report potential safety hazards or concerns to the appropriate personnel.

Position Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
  • Prior experience operating and setting up precision grinding machinery in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Candidates with experience in tool and cutter grinding, precision machining, or related roles will be given preference.
