Customer Technical Service Metallurgist

The successful candidate will function as a metallurgical expert and technical resource for the company's domestic and international service centers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting inside and outside sales personnel in customer development and the investigation, analysis and resolution of customer concerns associated with material or processes.
  • Working closely with layout, scheduling, purchasing, manufacturing, and quality functions, to review customer material specifications.
  • Reviewing customer specification requirement and communicate with customers and company's departments when exceptions exist. Obtain customer disposition as to the acceptability of product or material.
  • Serving as primary interface with our mill suppliers on the development of new opportunities.
  • Providing technical support to customers and end users on specifications, alloy selections and product suitability for applications.
  • Reviewing service center buys for possible item consolidations.
  • Keeping current on trends and developments within the metallurgical profession and industry.
  • Analyzing potential impact of trends on business and recommending corresponding action to operational leadership.
  • Ensuring the documentation and retention of all metallurgical test results and specifications.
  • Actively participating in quality management system process development and review.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Metallurgical or Material Sciences discipline plus a minimum of 7 years broad metallurgical experience required (primarily in stainless steels and special metals) which includes 3 plus years of experience working in an integrated melt mill (with at least two years of melt shop experience preferred). Significant experience working closely with customers regarding complex material requirements preferred. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in cross functional initiatives to meet customer needs. Extensive knowledge of metals industry standards, manufacturing processes and principles. Demonstrated conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to meet challenges with resourcefulness and generate suggestions for improving product and process quality. Proficiency with MS Office suite of software. Frequent overnight travel (both domestic and international) required.
