Cost Accountant
PURPOSE: The Staff Accountant reports to the company Corporate Controller and is responsible for the overall financial management of this paper making operation in the Midwest. This is a privately owned company with operations in the Northern US.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Providing accurate and timely data for month-end close as well as making improvements to the month-end accrual methodology
- Reviewing, developing and improving inventory management and production/usage measurement systems and procedures by working directly with operations
- Developing a cycle count methodology for finished goods and raw materials inventories as well as reconciling the balances with the General Ledger
- Development of best practices and key performance indicators (KPI’s) for financial transactions
- Providing backup to the Accounts Payable and Payroll functions
- Maintaining Quickbooks accounting for two satellite locations
- Improving and maintaining custom order quoting system
- Analyzing changes in product design, manufacturing methods or services provided, to determine effects on cost. Make estimates of new and proposed product costs
- Analyzing actual manufacturing costs and preparing periodic reports comparing to budget a prior periods
- Planning, collecting and analyzing data to determine costs of business activity such as raw material purchases, inventory and labor. Review overall spending and analyze trends and variances
- Developing reports specifying and comparing factors affecting prices and profitability of products or services.
- Assist in the review and implementation of potential software improvements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.S. Accounting, Finance, or related degree
- 5+ years hands-on Accounting experience in a manufacturing environment or auditing of manufacturing companies
- Pulp and Paper or related heavy/continuous manufacturing industry experience preferred
- Must have be able to demonstrate a track record of intellectual curiosity and ingenuity with excellent analytical skills; sound understanding of accounting principles and field procedures including their intersection with manufacturing operations
- Expert level Microsoft Excel skills and the proficient ability to use Outlook and Word. Syspro, Quickbooks and AS/400 experience highly preferred
- Experience working with engineering, manufacturing and distribution personnel on development and maintenance of inventory systems, reconciliation, cost control and analysis
- Ability to prepare daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports with a high level of accuracy
- Tenacity in investigating discrepancies and finding root causes. Active problem solver with responsibility for own work product
- Able to convey thoughts and ideas in a clear and concise manner
