Controller


Our construction client in Auburn is looking for a Controller. This is the number one finance position for this mid-sized company with great people and culture!

Position Summary

Reporting to the CEO, the Controller is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for directing the organization’s accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance functions. This role plays a critical part in supporting strategic decision-making by providing financial insight, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving process improvements across all finance-related functions.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Oversight

  • Lead the preparation and presentation of timely, accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee the company’s accounting operations, including the general ledger, job cost tracking, fixed assets, and financial reporting.
  • Coordinate and manage the annual audit process with external auditors.
  • Lead the budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with executive leadership and project managers.
  • Analyze financial data and provide insight on trends, risks, and opportunities to the Company President and leadership team.
  • Develop and maintain internal control policies, procedures, and systems to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance.

Cash Flow & Treasury Management

  • Monitor company cash flow and working capital; manage banking relationships and all treasury functions.
  • Forecast cash requirements and ensure timely availability of funds for operations and capital projects.
  • Review and approve all disbursements, including accounts payable, payroll, and tax payments.

Compliance & Taxation

  • Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements including payroll tax, sales tax, and heavy highway tax.
  • Oversee preparation and submission of required tax filings in coordination with third-party tax advisors as needed.
  • Stay current with relevant changes in accounting regulations and legislation and communicate impacts to leadership.

Accounts Receivable & Payable Oversight

  • Manage the accounts receivable function, including invoicing, aging analysis, and collections.
  • Oversee accounts payable process to ensure accurate coding, timely payments, and vendor management.
  • Approve subcontractor payments and ensure proper lien waivers and compliance documentation are in place.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Supervise and develop finance/accounting team members through mentorship, performance management, and ongoing training.
  • Coordinate cross-functional collaboration between the accounting department and project teams to ensure alignment and financial accuracy.
  • Evaluate department structure and staffing to support the company’s growth and scalability.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Evaluate and implement financial systems and software to improve efficiency and reporting capabilities.
  • Assist in the selection and rollout of accounting, payroll, or ERP systems in alignment with company growth and reporting needs.
  • Develop and document scalable accounting policies and operational procedures.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3–5 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role, preferably in construction, engineering, or a project-based industry.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, QuickBooks, Foundation, or other construction-oriented platforms) – Viewpoint/Vista a plus.
  • Strong Excel and financial modeling skills
  • Familiarity with WIP schedules, job cost accounting, and percent-complete revenue recognition

Pays $150 to $160k + bonus, 100% company paid medical/dental/vision for family, 401(k) with 4% match
