This requires 50% travel along the East Coast of the US - Candidates MUST be located within 1 hour of a major airport
We’re partnering with a well-established, mission-driven affordable housing operator to hire a Compliance Specialist who will play a key role in supporting a growing portfolio of Project-Based Section 8 communities. This is a fully remote position (East Coast-based) with up to 50% travel across a Florida and Mid-Atlantic portfolio.

About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Compliance, this role supports a 7-property portfolio (100% Project-Based Section 8 layered with LIHTC) where ownership holds the HUD contracts. You’ll serve as a key compliance resource to site teams, ensuring accuracy in certifications, supporting audits, and providing real-time guidance on complex regulatory matters.
You’ll also act as a “go-to” partner for on-site teams—helping troubleshoot calculations, reviewing files, and strengthening overall compliance operations.
Key Responsibilities
Compliance Leadership & Oversight
- Ensure full compliance with HUD, Project-Based Section 8, LIHTC, HOME, SAIL, and Fair Housing regulations
- Review and approve complex initial, interim, and annual certifications
- Interpret regulatory changes and guide teams on implementation
Portfolio Support & Training
- Serve as the primary compliance resource for Property and Regional Managers
- Provide hands-on support, including a help desk-style approach for calculations and file questions
- Conduct site visits, file reviews, and implement corrective action plans as needed
Audits & Reporting
- Lead audit preparation and execution, including file reviews and resolution of findings
- Oversee compliance reporting to agencies, investors, and lenders
- Maintain reporting calendars and ensure timely submissions
Operations & Process Improvement
- Monitor compliance metrics, certification pipelines, and risk indicators
- Develop and refine policies, SOPs, and training materials
- Partner with leadership to enhance internal controls and streamline processes
What We’re Looking For
- 3–5+ years of affordable housing experience, with strong exposure to compliance
- Deep knowledge of Project-Based Section 8 and LIHTC (required)
- Comfortable with 50% travel and a portfolio-facing role
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Proficiency in RealPage/OneSite and Excel
- Collaborative, self-motivated, and proactive mindset
Preferred:
- Industry certifications (COS, HCCP, SHCM, etc.) – or willingness to obtain (company will sponsor)
- Multi-state portfolio experience
