Circuit Breaker Technician

Description

We are seeking a hands-on Senior In-Shop Circuit Breaker Technician who enjoys solving technical problems, working with critical power equipment, and contributing to a strong safety-focused environment. This position offers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects in a well-maintained, climate-controlled shop, with long-term career stability and room for continued growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee advanced maintenance, diagnosis, repair, retrofit, rebuilding, and testing of low-, medium-, and high-voltage circuit breakers and switchgear.
  • Disassemble, inspect, service, and reassemble breakers, contactors, and associated power distribution equipment.
  • Work on equipment from a variety of major manufacturers across multiple voltage classes.
  • Troubleshoot both electrical and mechanical issues affecting breaker and switchgear performance.
  • Execute repair and testing activities for equipment such as:
    • High-voltage switchgear up to 3000A, including SF6 and vacuum breaker applications in systems such as 13.8kV/60Hz and 11kV/50Hz
    • Medium-voltage switchgear up to 5000A, including vacuum breaker applications in systems such as 34.5kV, 4.16kV/60Hz, and 6.6kV/50Hz
    • Low-voltage switchgear up to 5000A, including air circuit breaker applications in 480V/60Hz and 400V/50Hz systems
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and technical support to less experienced technicians, reinforcing safe work practices and quality standards.
  • Lead field service assignments involving breaker testing and repair, including occasional overnight travel when required.
  • Work closely with engineering and project teams to improve shop processes, workflow efficiency, and service quality.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Additional electro-mechanical training through a trade program, military background, or formal apprenticeship is strongly preferred.
  • At least 4 years of hands-on experience working with circuit breakers in the 480V to 25kV range.
  • Strong background in both mechanical and electrical testing of breaker and switchgear systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex power apparatus issues.
  • Previous experience with OEM equipment manufacturers or other highly technical industrial environments is an asset.
  • Solid understanding of industrial mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical power systems.
  • Proficient with industry-standard testing and diagnostic equipment, including insulation resistance testers, digital multimeters, hi-pot testers, oil dielectric testers, primary and secondary injection equipment, relay test equipment, cable fault locating tools, and oscilloscopes.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret detailed electrical schematics, wiring drawings, and technical diagrams.
  • PEARL Level 3 certification, or another comparable advanced certification, is required.
  • Ability to mentor junior team members and help support their technical development and certification progress is preferred.
