CNC Operator
Position Summary
This position is key to ensuring the daily safety, quality, service, and low-cost operation of Machine CNC operations. As a CNC machinist, you are expected to properly interpret client specifications, as outlined on the job traveler, properly set up your CNC machines to minimize waste and maximize productivity, while maintaining a safe, clean working environment. You will be responsible to make critical decisions about product quality, on time delivery, and communicate concerns and/or opportunities for continuous improvement to your cell lead. Additionally, you will be required to take precise measurements utilizing tools like calipers, micrometers, and gauge pins as examples. You will be expected to multitask and initiate the deburr process for many parts while maintaining and managing your CNC machine. In this role, you will be expected to perform the following duties.
Duties and Job Responsibilities include the following and other duties may be assigned as needed to support Machine Co.
- CNC machinist are expected to work within the work cell machining parts, deburring or blending parts within the work cell while assisting others as needed to meet production demands.
- Determine the proper job requirements to successfully install the fixtures, attachments and tools necessary to complete jobs according to set up documents, and ensure the materials are properly mounted prior to actual cutting with the CNC machine.
- Read, interpret, and discuss job specifications with employees, engineers and supervisors to guarantee consistency between plans and products, and collaborate to modify designs and programs when existing ones are not feasible
- A CNC machinist will work directly in the cutting process, make adjustments throughout each job as needed to ensure product quality; identify mistakes as they happen and take the necessary measures to eliminate errors.
- A machinist will need to complete a thorough and accurate quality review prior to and during operation. This includes a periodic quality part inspection with the CNC cell lead during the mfg. process to minimize any scrap parts.
- A CNC machinist will be required to ensure a successful start-up and cool down of their machines.
- A CNC Machinist is expected to always practice “clean as you go” in their work area and at the end of their shift, ensure their work area is swept, wiped down, and cleaned. This includes cleaning out the inside of the machines they have operated, putting away all tools and organizing the work bench.
- A machinist will be required to review and interpret machining plans while ensuring they are properly entered into the CNC machine to produce quality product. This includes working directly with your CNC cell lead, Quality Assurance and or programming teams when adjustments are needed.
- Ensure daily, weekly and monthly maintenance tasks are complete to ensure machine longevity, including lubrication, cleaning and tool replacement.
- You will be required to maximize productivity and minimize idle time during long machine run cycles.
- Participate in Root Cause and Corrective Action processes for any defective parts that may have been created.
- Ensure all site safety policies are followed and work with site management to identify any opportunities for safety improvement.
- Positively and effectively participate with the daily improvement with Safety, Quality, Service, and Cost.
Computer Skills
- To perform this job successfully, knowledge and use of Job Boss is required.
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED);
- Two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
Specialized Training:
- Blue Print interpretation
- Root Cause Corrective Action preferred
- Aviation and machine shop background preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities:
- Ability to self-manage without constant direct supervision
- Ability to work positively with others and take direction as needed to execute the daily production plan
- Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills with all-site visitors, employees, and supervision
- Must demonstrate a sense of urgency and dedication to supporting customer demands
- Commitment to work overtime on occasion
