Associate – Energy Regulatory (Electricity)

Our client, a highly regarded international law firm with a top-tier energy and infrastructure practice, is seeking a mid-level Associate with strong experience in electricity regulatory and energy transactional matters. This role offers the opportunity to work on sophisticated, high-profile matters involving power markets, infrastructure, and regulatory compliance.

The position may be based in Houston, New York City, or Washington, D.C.

What you’ll do:

  • Advise clients on federal and state electricity regulatory compliance, including matters before FERC and state public utility commissions
  • Represent energy market participants in administrative litigation, regulatory approvals, audits, and enforcement actions
  • Draft and negotiate a wide range of energy-related agreements, including:
    • Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs and VPPAs)
    • Interconnection and transmission service agreements
    • Infrastructure use and marketing agreements
  • Support M&A and other corporate transactions in the electricity and energy sector from a regulatory perspective
  • Analyze electricity market rules, grid reliability requirements, and market design issues
  • Conduct regulatory research and prepare memoranda and legal opinions
  • Assist with due diligence and coordinate with internal subject matter experts and local counsel
  • Manage multiple matters under tight deadlines while working closely with senior attorneys and clients

What you will need:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Admission to practice and good standing in the relevant jurisdiction
  • 3+ years of law firm, in-house or regulatory agency experience focused on electricity regulatory matters
  • Demonstrated experience with FERC proceedings and/or state utility commission matters
  • Strong drafting, analytical, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams and operate effectively under pressure
  • Client-service mindset with excellent communication skills
  • Collaborative, proactive, and detail-oriented approach

The expected salary range for these positions is $260,000 - $390,000, based on a New York location and dependent on experience
