Assistant Production Manager

PURPOSE: The Assistant Production Manager with day-to-day activities to produce specialty products in an efficient, cost effective, safe and environmentally compliant manner. This includes daily preplanning, effective communication with Scheduling, Receiving, Quality Control, Product Development, Maintenance and other departments that could affect production quality and continuity. Responsible for entire manufacturing process from raw material to shipping including P&L.


  1. Act as the primary interface with Maintenance, Engineering, Product Design, Quality Control, Purchasing and other departments to ensure efficiency of machine operations.
  2. Ensure efficient and economical use of raw materials, systems, labor and equipment in the manufacturing of specialty products through planning and implementation of productivity improvement programs.
  3. Develop and issue product specifications.
  4. Work with manager to develop and implement capital lists and operating goals and objectives for area of responsibility. Regularly evaluate and report on progress.
  5. Implement, facilitate and maintain training programs for assigned area.
  6. Maintain ISO, safety and environmental compliance within area of responsibility.
  7. Conduct or coordinate departmental meetings as necessary.
  8. Identify process improvements and Institutes improvement programs for established product lines and take an active role in assisting Product Design with new product line and grade developments.
  9. Manage performance and cost of clothing, labor, raw materials and other related production processes in assigned area.
  10. Coordinate maintenance activities and maintain a high standard of housekeeping for assigned area.
  11. Manage assigned staff. Provide coaching, support and regular feedback to staff. Prepares and conduct performance reviews.
  12. Management resource for other production areas in addition to own. This includes operations within the site, as well as other company production locations.
  13. Responsible for Staff Duty Officer coverage on a rotating schedule basis for emergency coordinator efforts until local authorities assume control.
  14. Take an active role in providing performance feedback and developing careers of direct reports.
  15. Develop and implement strategies to effectively utilize the capabilities of the technical staff assigned
  16. Provide coverage for other production departments on a temporary basis as required by management.
  17. Meet sales commitments within time, cost, and quality requirements.
  18. Contribute to manufacturing strategic planning and policy making, through active participation in manufacturing staff activities.
  19. Structure the manufacturing organization to contain cost and improve operating efficiency
  20. Key performance indicators include productivity, conversion costs, uptime, waste, yield, quality complaints, fixed costs, OTAPIF, Schedule Adherence, Lead Time, safety and environmental metrics.
  21. Recommend process improvements, including machine component layout.
  22. Handle stress related to handling multiple, complex issues at once
  23. Drive functional excellence throughout the Value Stream: maximizing efficient asset utilization, accelerate inventory velocity and support activities to reduce conversion costs.
  24. Monitor finished goods stock level: implementation of target stock levels, monitoring of the slow moving products
  25. Define capital equipment required for converting to meet changing business conditions and to improve the safety, consistency and cost effectiveness of existing operations.
  26. Oversee resolution of customer complaints, internal workmanship rejections and safety violations. Establishes and implements systems to assure problems do not repeat.


  • Bachelor of Science Engineering or Paper Science
  • 5-7+ years of Paper Machines / Industry experience. Supervisory experience in paper manufacturing preferred
