THE OPPORTUNITY
Our client is a growing branded manufacturer & distributor of team sports equipment and apparel. They are privately owned and have been delivering high-value, traditional & innovative athletic equipment and apparel via outstanding, integrity-driven customer service for thirty-five years. We are seeking a dynamic financial Assistant Controller to join the accounting team. This is a newly created position to meet current and future demands as the company continues to expand.

You will be responsible for the planning, directing and coordinating of all accounting operational functions while maintaining strong internal controls to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.

The ideal candidate will have extensive marketing experience and the ability to lead a team to drive and deliver solutions that move the company forward.

REPORTING STRUCTURE
Reports to the VP-Finance & Accounting.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead a team of 3 accounting staff, including providing training, support and review of the functional areas they oversee. Functional areas include cash management, accounts payable, inter-company accounting, payroll and inventory.
  • Manage the month-end close process, including posting of various month-end entries, reconcilement and review of accounts.
  • Prepare financial statements and assist the VP-Finance & Accounting with variance summaries for management.
  • Assess the current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implement new processes.
  • Oversee sales and use tax reporting.
  • Coordinate activities for the external accountant review and the bank field exam.
  • Assist with insurance renewals, including application completion and forecasting coverage needs.
  • Act as backup for payroll processing.
  • Assist with the annual budget process.
  • Prepare the monthly borrowing base certificate for the bank and calculate debt covenants quarterly.
  • Monitor the department’s key performance indicators and develop strategies to improve.
  • Perform other duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. CPA designation a plus.
  • 5+ years’ experience in Controller or similar level role; wholesale distribution and manufacturing a plus.
  • High level of accountability.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to oversee people and processes, but also handle day to day work requirements.
  • Proficient in accounting and financial software and systems.
  • Strong data manipulation technology skills, including Intermediate level Excel skills.
  • Inquisitive nature and desire to continuously learn.
