The Application Packager creates software installation packages for both in-house developed and Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) software, for automated distribution to a standard locked-down desktop environment. Manages and utilizes SCCM environment.

  • Works with application development, application support teams, and business users, to determine software installation requirements.
  • Works with subject matter experts and project managers to validate installation packages, and pilot and deploy software.
  • Works with infrastructure teammates to schedule software distribution


  • Support a geographically distributed organization with desktops and VDI
  • Package
    • Package applications and software updates utilizing tools such as SCCM, Flexera Admin Studio, Install Shield and Wise Package Studio.
    • Create desktop images utilizing technologies such as; Business Desktop Deployment (BDD), Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT), Windows Deployment Services (WDS), Windows Pre-installation Environment (WinPE), Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK), and Pre-Boot Execution Environment (PXE).
    • Document the customizations and changes made during the packaging process; maintain documentation for software packages.
    • Provide patch management support and maintenance window operations.
  • Test and Troubleshoot
    • Complies with software packaging quality and performance standards, and testing processes and procedures.
    • Applies optimal testing techniques and performs necessary quality control checks to verify software installation packages work as designed.
    • Thoroughly evaluate, validate, and execute application packages and validation cases; ensure that packages provide logs; document and provide evaluation results
    • Researches and troubleshoots installation package defects – make coding adjustments.
  • Deploy
    • Develop and follow procedures for testing applications prior to deployment.
    • Validate deployment plans for compliance within existing performance limitations of the enterprise servers’ software.
    • Provide a status report before and after updates and remediation actions are executed.
    • Send notification to associates / groups prior to and after implemented requests
  • SCCM Responsibilities
    • Serve as a SCCM Packager providing senior level Tier 3 packaging support services.
    • Create, update, deploy, troubleshoot, and remove objects in the SCCM environment, sites, DPs, and clients based on provided guidelines.
    • Create, update, and delete dynamic and static collections and removal of applications reports for installation, modification, and removal of applications.
    • Modify the SCCM configuration and Server Management System to collect information from the registry and Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) repository.
    • Analyze SCCM log files and the current enterprise configuration.
    • Troubleshoot and help remediate sites experiencing SCCM issues.
  • Soft Skills
    • Work independently with minimal supervision creating time sensitive deployment packages for COTS and custom applications in an enterprise environment.
    • Play a lead role in meetings relating to specific technical projects or tasks.
    • Play a lead role in functional and technical specification reviews, and works closely with design engineers and project teams to ensure software install packages meet quality and performance requirements.
    • Provides estimates on packaging efforts and reports on progress.
    • Communicates status and escalates complex packaging issues
  • Misc
    • Identifies and implements process improvement
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • There will be some on-call or non-standard hours for this position.


  • Technical
    • At least five years of relevant hands-on experience providing SCCM packaging support for installation and deployment, testing software-package install scripts in a Microsoft Windows environment, and using Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) to deploy software packages to Wintel PCs
    • At least five years of experience packaging applications and application updates using Flexera Admin Studio, Install Shield, or Wise Installer/Packaging Studio.
    • Advanced knowledge of MSI packaging techniques, PowerShell, and creating MSI custom actions.
    • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) or Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD) certification is preferred.
    • Thorough knowledge of Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 operating systems, particularly with regard to the file system and system registry.
    • Familiarity with VMWare and/or other desktop virtualization products.
    • A thorough understanding of how applications install on Microsoft Windows platforms.
    • Knowledge of Active Directory, Microsoft Registry and ability to query/modify settings.
  • Process
    • Experience with formal Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
    • Familiarity with Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) practices for IT service management preferred.
  • Experience
    • Understanding of, and ability to apply, basic inspection and testing techniques, and corrective and preventive actions, including root cause analysis.
    • Experience in an IT Desktop Support environment preferred.
    • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage time to meet assigned deadlines.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and individually.
    • Ability to absorb rapidly new technical information and apply it effectively.
    • Ability to develop and maintain accurate and comprehensive IT documentation.
    • Strong development experience, especially scripting and packaging.
    • Experience working in a large enterprise environment and networks.
  • Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Information Technology, Computer Science or related discipline.
MCSA or MCSE Microsoft Certifications. (Note: Some retired Microsoft certifications may still be considered for this opportunity
