Applications Engineer – Power Systems Modernization & Product Specialist

Role Overview

Our client is seeking a highly capable and detail-oriented Applications Engineer – Power Systems Modernization & Product Specialist to serve as a critical link between sales, engineering, and project execution.

This role is based in our Lakeland, FL office and involves regular in-person collaboration with internal teams. Limited flexibility for remote work is available as needed.

This is a hybrid technical-commercial role responsible for evaluating incoming opportunities, developing technical solutions, and producing high-quality proposals that position our company to win and successfully execute complex power system projects.

Work is performed within existing, live electrical power systems including data centers, utilities, commercial/industrial facilities, and government projects.

Unlike traditional engineering roles focused on new system design, this position centers on retrofit, modernization, and custom-engineered solutions within active systems.

This role drives front-end project success by developing scopes, pricing, and execution-ready plans.

Key Responsibilities

Applications Engineering, Integration & Custom Solutions

  • Review RFQs, specifications, and drawings
  • Interpret one-lines, schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Develop system-level solutions integrating switchgear, breakers, controls, PLCs
  • Apply knowledge of voltages (480V–600V, 5kV–38kV)
  • Define custom applications and configurations
  • Evaluate system integration with BMS, SCADA, HMI

Proposal Development & Commercial Ownership

  • Develop scopes of work and proposals
  • Build pricing models (equipment, labor, execution)
  • Align technical solutions with sales strategy
  • Interface with customers, contractors, and reps

Execution Planning & Cost Development

  • Understand field and shop execution
  • Account for demolition, installation, FAT, commissioning
  • Develop realistic labor and sequencing assumptions

Product & Technical Support

  • Apply knowledge of UL standards and switchgear
  • Evaluate OEM vs custom solutions
  • Ensure compatibility with existing systems

Process Ownership & Proposal Management

  • Own proposal lifecycle
  • Develop templates and pricing tools
  • Track KPIs and proposal metrics

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Coordinate between sales, engineering, PMs, and field teams
  • Support alignment and process improvement

Required Experience & Technical Background

  • Knowledge of low/medium voltage systems, switchgear, breakers, relays
  • Understanding of voltages (480V–600V, 5kV–38kV)
  • Familiarity with UL standards (891, 1558, 508A)
  • Experience interpreting electrical drawings
  • Understanding of field execution and brownfield systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering degree or equivalent experience
  • 3–8+ years in power systems or applications roles
  • Experience in data centers, utilities, or industrial environments
  • Experience with PLCs, SCADA, BMS
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • ERP/CRM familiarity
