Vice President for Development

BACKGROUND: The American Academy in Rome is in its sixth year under the leadership of President Mark Robbins. Founded in 1894, the Academy is dedicated to the highest levels of art and scholarship and supports innovative artists, writers and scholars living and working together in a dynamic international community. The Academy represents 11 disciplines in the Arts and Humanities and supports the work of artists and scholars who live and work in Rome.

The Academy awards the Rome Prize annually to a select group of artists and scholars in a broad range of specialties that includes but is not limited to literature, music, architecture, design, conservation. The winners, selected by independent juries through a national competition process, are invited to Rome the following year to pursue their work in an atmosphere conducive to intellectual and artistic experimentation and interdisciplinary exchange. This group is joined by other invited residents who further enrich this unique opportunity.

The Academy is now at a pivotal moment in its history: committed to strengthening its position as a meaningful contemporary institution in an increasingly global and technological arena.

THE OPPORTUNITY: The Vice President for Development will design and implement a comprehensive development strategy to maximize and leverage relationships with current donors and identify and cultivate relationships with new prospective donors. This is an ideal opportunity to reimagine the approach to philanthropy by tapping into innovative tactics and strategies to engage new constituents and increase contributed revenue.

The Vice President is based in New York, reports to the President, works closely with the Board of Directors, and leads a development team of five in New York and two in Rome. S/he will work with a deeply committed and engaged group of colleagues and leadership team in a unique hybrid academic and cultural not-for-profit setting to help ensure a robust future.


  • Development leadership experience, ideally in higher education or the cultural arts.
  • Demonstrated record of growing a major individual donor program; a comfortable front-line major gift officer.
  • Knowledge of best practices in all areas of fundraising, including annual and capital campaigns and planned gifts.
  • High-level board relations and engagement skills.
  • An experienced manager and mentor.
  • A collaborative colleague; committed to working in partnership with the finance, program, and communications teams.
  • Savvy about online fundraising tactics, social media, and database management/maximization.
  • Experience with the New York, national, and global philanthropic communities.
  • Well-developed communication and presentation skills; able to serve as a key ambassador.
  • A capacity for creativity and innovation.
  • Genuine interest in the Academy’s mission.
  • Ability to travel, both locally and globally, as required.
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
