Employee Benefits Practice Leader

Position: Director, Employee Benefits Practice

Location: Washington, D.C.

Reports to: CEO/President

Role Description

The Director for the Employee Benefits (EB) Practice manages and directs all facets of the Employee Benefits division of the client. As the head of all Employee Benefits operations, it is a critical role for the organization’s ongoing success. The EB Practice Leader is responsible for the strategic planning, program development, industry benchmarking, carrier relationships and client retention and new business development in addition to management of the overall benefits team. This role is highly visible role both internally and externally, helping the company continue to build and expand its employee benefits footprint nationally. This role works closely with the operations team and senior company leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading EB team and executing strategy.
  • Must be a central resource for all EB related activities and client management.
  • Lead and communicate all EB related initiatives to team members, utilizing resources as needed.
  • Work closely with marketing and operations teams to meet objectives and growth targets of EB practice area.
  • Co-develop and drive execution of EB corporate strategy.
  • Work with team members and partners to maximize EB sales and cross sell opportunities in the region.
  • Work with individual Producers to increase revenue and retention as applicable.
  • Work with EB teams to ensure “best practices” are in place in the region. The EB Practice Leader will have authority to implement strategic changes in consultation with the company executive leadership.
  • Participate in executive management team meetings as required.
  • Provide a vision and growth plan for the EB practice inclusive of industry benchmarking.
  • Drive program offering, including service capability expansion across group medical, ancillary lines and special programs.
  • Manage insurance carrier access and support as needed, along with market relationship development to find new products and services for clients and prospects.
  • Work with leadership team to enhance Value Proposition, Stewardship process and Account Management services.
  • Lead overall client relationships, new business initiatives and meet retention targets.
  • Manage designated books of business for team, overseeing and leading revenue generating activities.
  • Generate and execute new business development strategy with EB team via inbound and outbound activity, networking and other lead sources.
  • Support open enrolment meetings at client locations as well as via Webex as needed.
  • Provide support for troubleshooting client service-related matters covering the company’s value chain (e.g. service, claims, etc…).
  • Lead thought leadership in the EB practice.
  • Manage the renewal marketing process, as well as lead the proposal development in coordination with the operations team.
  • Assist clients across full risk spectrum, from benefits to all commercial insurance lines to help manage their total cost of risk.
  • Present and assist clients to implement wellness solutions, as necessary.
  • Provide administrative support on other tasks as they arise, such as assigned special projects, development of new ideas/services and other projects, as requested.

Collaborative and Capacity Building Responsibilities

  • This position has direct reports.
  • Participation in the overall management, operations and strategic development of the executive team.
  • Ensure that client service concerns, product enhancements and requirements meet company service level standards.
  • Foster service excellence and partner feedback.
  • Drive continuous operational improvements, service standards and excellence.
  • Engage colleagues, peers and company leadership as an active listener and contributor.
  • Work actively with company divisions on the operational realities of partner service management.
  • Proactively perform regularly scheduled courtesy service calls and meetings to assigned key accounts.
  • Facilitate information sharing and participate in group meetings, industry seminars, and training programs to ensure clients are knowledgeable on all areas of their benefits.
  • Maintain abreast of compliance and industry trends within the EB space.

Position Requirements and Skills

  • Knowledgeable of employee benefits, group health plans, and administration systems.
  • Minimum 5 years Employee benefits insurance experience
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in managerial role
  • Current L&H license required.
  • P&C insurance license preferred but not required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Possess current insights on industry legislative, tax, and market updates.
  • Must be a professional, proactive, service-oriented individual capable of delivering consistent service standards.
  • Possess a high attention to detail.
  • Track record of excelling in highly demanding customer service environments is essential.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Well-versed in Applied EPIC, Employee Navigator and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook).
