General Manager
JMC HR Consulting is pleased to partner with Chéticamp Co-op in the search for their next General Manager, a senior leadership role overseeing the overall performance, sustainability, and day-to-day operations of one of Cape Breton’s most established and community-rooted co-operatives.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, this fully on-site position requires a visible, steady presence and close collaboration with store managers and staff to ensure operational excellence while advancing longer-term strategic priorities. The role offers meaningful Board engagement, strong influence across the organization and community, and transition support through overlap with interim leadership. Relocation support, including potential housing assistance, may be available for the right candidate.
Living and Leading in Cape Breton
For the right leader, this role combines meaningful executive responsibility with a grounded, people-centred environment. It is well suited to someone who values stability, connection, and leadership that is present and practical, without the pace or pressure of a large urban setting.
This role is based in Chéticamp, a historic Acadian community on the west coast of Cape Breton Island, where the Cabot Trail meets the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Gulf of St. Lawrence stretches out beyond your doorstep.
Chéticamp offers a way of life that is grounded, connected, and community-driven. Daily life is shaped by short commutes, familiar faces, and strong local relationships. French language and Acadian culture remain central to the community’s identity, alongside a welcoming and growing English-speaking population.
For those drawn to lifestyle as much as leadership, the area offers:
- A slower, more manageable pace without stepping away from professional responsibility
- Coastal living with easy access to hiking, trails, ocean views, and outdoor recreation year-round
- A strong sense of belonging, where leadership is visible, valued, and impactful
- Lower congestion and cost-of-living pressures compared to larger urban centres
Chéticamp is well suited to individuals or families considering a move from busier regions of Atlantic Canada, Quebec, or elsewhere in Canada, and who are motivated by the opportunity to integrate into a close-knit, purpose-driven community.
For the right leader, Cape Breton is more than a place to work. It is a place to put down roots, contribute meaningfully, and build a long-term future while leading a complex and essential organization.
