FUNDING: Third Street had a 2019 annual operating budget of $8.9M. The largest source of revenue was tuition and registration ($4.1M). Revenue also comes from contributions and grants from government, foundations, corporations, and individuals including bequests and special events ($2.6M), with the balance coming from partnerships/rentals and other revenue-generating activities. Endowment/cash reserves currently total approximately $11M.

THE OPPORTUNITY: The Director of Finance and Administration will provide both hands-on and strategic financial and operational leadership across the organization as well as guidance and operational forecasting to support both current and anticipated new initiatives and overall organizational growth plans. This individual in this role staffs the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board of Directors and works closely with other board members and committees.

The Director of F&A reports to and serves as a strategic thought partner to Valerie G. Lewis, the Anna-Maria Kellen Executive Director, and leads a team that currently includes the finance, human resources, and operations teams. Responsibilities also include risk management and information technology. S/he/they also work in close partnership with virtually every department and division. The Director of F&A will join a financially solid, widely respected institution and a professional and volunteer community that genuinely cares for the families, individuals, and schools it serves.


  • Track record of success and formal training and experience in accounting and financial management, and/or relevant certifications/academic background.
  • Demonstrated success leading finance and operations teams in a fast-paced, growing organization.
  • Deep understanding of not-for-profit accounting (candidates with government or corporate finance experience and a substantial understanding of not-for-profit organizations may be considered).
  • Experience with business planning.
  • Able to manage a recurring cycle of major capital projects.
  • Experience managing both sides of the balance sheet.
  • Change management.
  • Able to track and analyze trends using data to support decisions and measure outcomes.
  • History of serving as a strategic partner to a dynamic executive director.
  • Experience working with boards.
  • Able to see the big picture as well as the details.
  • Knowledge of common not-for-profit accounting software.
  • Interest in music and the mission of Third Street.
  • Able to build strong and effective working relationships with peers and staff across the organization.
  • Provide supportive supervision and foster teamwork and professional growth and success for team members.
  • Self-motivated and driven by a strong work ethic.
  • Experience working in a union environment.
